operating system - Default vs Custom Software Installation -

i work @ company has of software installed in "/software" directory. basic installation path might this

/software/maya/2015.sp1/linux.centos6.x64/...

i appreciate kind of custom folder structure extent company every piece of software policy, software isn't version controlled or otherwise doesn't make sense so.

also, tool mentioned earlier, autodesk maya, has install directions version specific. if install maya on windows, goes "c:\program files\autodesk\maya2017" i'm not sure benefit of having custom version folder is. on top of that. different oses have different installation directories, too, not concern maya

windows: c:\program files\autodesk\maya2017 mac: /applications/autodesk/maya2017/ linux: /usr/autodesk/maya2017-x64

a practical reason think of having custom install locations third party software that, in custom structure 1 above, on linux , still able view windows binaries without having log machine nice, doesn't outweigh times when wished default (i.e. looking documentation online or other developer-tutorials, assume default installation)

anyway, realize not programs example used , don't know enough have perspective. can please give me concrete examples of times when custom install directory benefited way worked or horror stories dealing default installs? appreciated , thanks
